Did You Know PETA Wanted Fishkill to Change Its Name?
I'm still a little new to the area, but as I spend more and more time in the Hudson Valley I'm learning a lot about interesting and historical events that have gone on here.
I drive through Fishkill a lot, and I thought it was only natural to add them to my list of towns to get to know better.
Now I have to start you with this fact, according to History of Fishkill, and Wikipedia:
PETA Is Not A Fishkill Fan
The animal rights group came after Fishkill because they found the name was offensive and suggested violent acts towards fish. The name actually comes from a Dutch word that means "creek."
Military Housing
Fishkill once housed one of the largest colonial military encampments during the Revolutionary War. Alexander Hamilton was a a big name who took residence right in the town.
If Walls Could Talk...
During the 1700's, The Dutch Reformed Church was built. Don't let the name fool you, this was also used as a military prison during the Revolutionary War.
Another cool thing about this building...
Fishkill was once the capital of New York because the 4th Provincial Congress met here.
Hospital Help
The Trinity Church right on Hopewell Avenue was built in 1760. This was actually used as a hospital during the Revolutionary War.
