Cops: Unlicensed Man Causes Car to Fall 100 Feet in Hudson Valley

A man allegedly driving without a license is accused of hitting a car, causing it to fall 100 feet down an embankment.

As previously reported, this past Wednesday, a car fell about 100 feet over an embankment near the Racoon Saloon on Route 9W in Marlboro and landed vertically into a body of water.

According to police, a 78-year-old man from Newburgh was driving without a license and unknowingly backed into a parked Honda while trying to back into a parking space.

The impact caused the Honda to slide on snow and ice and ultimately slide over the embankment and down into the body of water, officials say. The 78-year-old Newburgh man was given a ticket for unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

A fireman from the Marlboro Fire Department found the Honda unoccupied after members from the fire department used a series of ropes and pulleys to lower a fireman down the embankment to the car.

The owner of the car was later identified as a 26-year-old woman from Beacon. She was found at her home in good health, police say.

The accident caused massive delays in both directions on Route 9W in Ulster County late Wednesday morning.

No injuries were reported, according to police.
