Each year, before the heat and humidity arrive, health departments and emergency management and preparedness offices in each county in the Hudson Valley work with The New York State Department of Health to provide a list of cooling centers.

While this list is updated every year, it doesn’t mean that each location is open every time the temperature rises. Before you gather your things and make the trip to your nearest location this weekend, it’s a good idea to call ahead and make sure they are open.

Some are only open during business hours and some are opened only when a heat emergency has been declared. It’s a good list to hang on to though, just in case.

As of this writing, there no centers listed for Sullivan County, but libraries, malls, movie theaters are all good places to spend some time in air-conditioning during the hottest part of the day.

Remember, make sure to call ahead to see if the cooling center closest to you is open throughout the summer.
