The Poughkeepsie Journal is reporting that John Flowers, community organizer extraordinaire passed away this evening at the age of 71. My Facebook page has countless tributes and memorials to him already.

I remember when I first heard about John Flowers. He was described to me as someone who went above and beyond to make people smile, to make sure that no one ever felt forgotten. He always had a smile. I don't think I ever saw John look sad or down.

He organized an annual Easter Egg Hunt for the children of Poughkeepsie, he gathered volunteers every year at the holidays to help wrap presents and give gifts to those in the hospital. I had the opportunity to interview him and some of his volunteers on 'In Touch' to talk about the very first Father's Day Parade in Poughkeepsie. I remember the passion and conviction in his voice when he talked about how he wanted young men to be proud of being a Dad, and being a part of their children's life, no matter what.

I saw him every year at the Dutchess/Ulster Heart Walk and a myriad of other community events. When he would come to the station, he never failed to bring the most beautiful red roses for all the ladies in the building.

I can never do John and all of his work justice in just one article. I couldn't list all of the people he helped and happy memories he created for others. I can only simply say that Poughkeepsie and Dutchess County are all the better because of him. Thank you John for all that you did and everything you taught us.

Rest in peace dear sir, you've earned it.
