This week in the news I saw that Author Roald Dahl's books were being revised. Language in the books was being changed that was deemed "out of touch", my words not theirs.

Numerous news outlets reported that both the publisher and the Estate of Roald Dahl had decided to make these changes in Dahl's books in order to have them be more inclusive and less insensitive. As you can imagine this decision has not set well with everyone.

Roald Dahl is responsible for giving us such books as Matilda, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Witches, James and the Giant Peach, and more. In an article published by CNN online, it claims that such words as "fat" and "ugly" have been substituted or even removed.

The article goes on to claim that there are 59 changes alone in The Witches, a Dahl book that was made into a movie in 1990 and 2020.

90 Miles Theatre Company to Stage the Original Version of the Witches by Dahl

Like most of you, I was most familiar with Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I actually had to scratch my head a bit to remember the Witches. Once I did I remembered that there had been a movie made or two. And as you know things come in threes so that has to be why later this week I came across a notice that 90 Miles Threatre Company is Doing a performance of The Witches in April.

I was happy to see that the week we are all talking about the Roald Dahl books a local Theatre Company would be doing a play adapted from one of his books. Turns out they have had it in the works for a while. I reach out to them about the language changes and at the time they hadn't heard about it.

90 Miles Theatre Company actually does a version that was adapted long before all of this rewrite action was taking place. Their adaptation is apparently from 1993 according to the front of the script.

The play The Witches is adapted by David Wood from Roald Dahl's book. It is licensed by Samuel French through Concord Theatricals. As far as the play is concerned it uses some text pulled from the book but is an adaption. (90 Miles Theatre Company vis Facebook Messanger)
