New York State has over 5,300 functioning dams across the state. Comptroller Tom DiNapoli released a report last week which says that 1,000 of those dams are either in high-hazard or intermediate hazard status. Of that, 205 are located in the Hudson Valley region (which includes Dutchess, Orange, Ulster, Sullivan, Columbia and Greene Counties) 60 of those are considered to be of a 'High-Hazard' level.

While none of the dams are considered to be unsafe, according to the press release, it will be costing New York over $360 million to bring all of these dams up to current code conditions.

The comptroller is bringing this to resident's attention because as dams deteriorate and are not kept in proper repair, flooding could potentially happen during significant bouts of bad weather.
