20 Sick, Scared Cats Abandoned at Upstate Humane Society
An unfortunate situation unfolded after an Upstate New York animal rescue closed up shop for the night.
The Mohawk Hudson Humane Society shared the heartwrenching story on their social media accounts on Sunday, April 10th, 2022, writing:
Last night at 7:00 pm, after the shelter was closed, three women pulled up to the shelter and began unloading box after box, even an entire dog crate, at the front door. They were filled with frightened cats and sickly kittens. When we reviewed the surveillance video, we saw these women throw additional loose cats from the back of their SUV, cats scattering across our property.
Thankfully, a neighbor close by alerted the Mohawk Hudson staff about the situation and they were able to rush back to the building to get the scared and sick cats and kittens to safety.
It was reported that 20 cats were found in total and are currently being sheltered at the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society. Staff at the Humane Society spent Saturday night "cleaning ears, eyes, and worrying over the cats lost to the fields outside the shelter."
The animal shelter writes that this whole situation could have been avoided with a simple email. They write:
If you find yourself in over your head with cats and kittens, call or email us. We will make an appointment for you to bring them in. We offer low cost, sometimes free, spay/neuter and vaccinations. admitting@mohawkhumane.org
The Humane Society adds "Yes, they are cute kittens, but what happened last night was a violation of the law. It was selfish and it was inhumane."
They are continuing to investigate and collect security video footage to identify the 3 women who were seen abandoning the cats and kittens. If you have any information, reach out to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society at (518) 434-8128.
