A Hudson Valley high school student and another local teen lost their lives while walking in the area.

In a message to the Monticello community, Monticello Central School District Superintendent Tammy Mangus confirmed on Sunday a Monticello High School student and a former Robert J. Kaiser Middle School student were killed in what's described as an automobile accident. A third student was injured.

"When an event of this magnitude touches our community, it affects us all," Mangus wrote on the school district's website. "The district is working with Sullivan County BOCES and will have a support team of social workers and school psychologists available at both Monticello High School and RJK Middle School to help our students deal with this tremendous tragedy. It is natural for students to display a variety of emotions as they cope with their grief. Always know that parents as well as students may contact the district if they are need of support."
