Ready for a wave of Upstate New York nostalgia?

The History of Upstate New York's Six Flags Great Escape

When you think of New York as a tourist destination, you probably think New York City right? However, New York State has way more to offer than just Times Square. Ask any native New Yorker and they'll tell you a drive up north will change your life.

Since the early 50s Queensbury, NY has been a popular stop on the map as it was home to one of the more popular amusement parks in the state.

Storytown USA opened in 1954 and was a magical land of nursery rhymes. It was a Mother Goose Themed Amusement Park geared more towards children.  By 1983 Storytown USA changed over to The Great Escape.

The Great Escape was known for their rollercoasters like the wooden coaster call The Comet and The Steamin' Demon that sat on display at the front of the park. The Queensbury amusement park was the place to be in 90s!

By 2006 the amusement park finally donned the Six Flags title, when they opened The Six Flags Great Escape Lodge & Indoor Waterpark.

While there have been many changes to The Great Escape over the years, bits and pieces of the history of Storytown USA can still be found on the premises:

Abandoned Tourist Attractions in Upstate New York

I don't know about your family traditions, but our vacations up to the Lake George/Queensbury area always included 2 stops: The Catskill Game Farm and Frontier Town!

The Catskill Game Farm closed down in the early 2000s and the attraction laid vacant for years. Recently, the old Game Farm has had a resurgence as an Airbnb. It's become one of the more popular destination on the site too!

Frontier Town was a Wild West theme park in North Hudson, New York. It closed its doors back in 1998, but I always have fond memories of trying to escape the bandits in a wagon!

While parts of Frontier Town are still visible, the property has become a popular camping destination in New York State.

Take a look at the abandoned ruins of Frontier Town below:
