Today is National Wear Red for Women Day. It falls on the first Friday in February and I always have this dilemma, while standing in front of my closet I wonder if anyone will notice that I wear the same red sweater every year. This year, because it is so cold, I actually have a million layers on so chances are no one will be the wiser, but I digress.

February is, of course, Heart month and the American Heart Association wants to make sure that we know a few facts. Every year, 1 in 3 women die of heart disease and stroke. But it doesn't have to be that way, because 80 percent of cardiac events can be prevented with education and lifestyle changes. That's why there's a National Wear Red for Women Day, to raise awareness and save lives.

According to Go Red For Women, since 2003 there have been tremendous strides made in the fight against heart disease and stroke, 6 out of 10 women have changed their diets, more than 40% regularly check their cholesterol levels, and death in women has decreased by more than 30 percent over the past 10 years.

If you're a woman, or if you have a woman or women in your life that you care about, make sure you know these facts and also remember that you can join me at the Dutchess Ulster Heart Walk March 14 at Vassar College in the Walker Field House
in Poughkeepsie and March 21 at Dietz Stadium in Kingston and take even more steps to fight heart disease and stroke.
