The weather is changing, the days are getting shorter and people of the Hudson Valley are gearing up for hunting season. Even our Junior Hunters.

This upcoming weekend brings some new and big opportunities for Junior Hunters with the Youth Firearms Big Game Hunt. From October 8th through October 10th junior license hunters from ages 14 to 15 (who are accompanied by a licensed adult hunter) may use a firearm to hunt deer and bear.

Every eligible junior hunter is allowed to take one deer of either sex and a bear. While junior hunters may tag many deer this weekend , they may only take one deer with firearms. The Youth Big Game Hunt takes place throughout New York State except in Suffolk County and bowhunting areas. The Department of Environmental Conservation believed that the Youth Big Game Hunt will teach young family members and friends the fine points of big game hunting. Additional rules that apply to young hunters and their mentors can be found in the Hunting and Trapping Guide on pages 37 and 38.
