Consumer affairs has put together some helpful tips for when you receive a robocall.

If you answer the phone and hear a recorded message and not a live person, it's a robocall. You've most likely gotten a robocall for political candidates or charities asking for donations. These calls are legal.

If the recording is a sales message and you haven’t given your written permission to get calls from the company on the other end, the call is illegal. In addition to the phone calls being illegal, the pitch may also be a scam.

What should you do if you receive one of these robocalls? Here some tips:

  • Hang up. Don't press 1 to speak to a live operator, or any other button to have your number removed from the list. If you respond by pressing a number, it will probably lead to more robocalls.
  • Consider contact your phone company to have the number blocked. Remember that telemarketers change caller ID information easily and often.
  • Report your experience to the Federal Trade Commission at 1-888-382-1222.
