The bridge that runs over the Sawkill Creek is now being renamed in remembrance of Town of Ulster Police Chief Anthony E. Cruise.

On Wednesday the Ulster County Legislature voted unanimously to rename the Sawkill School Bridge after the late town of Ulster police chief, the bridge will now be called the Chief Anthony E. Cruise Memorial Bridge, according to the Daily Freeman.

Kingston Legislator David Donaldson told the Freeman that,

“He helped build bridges, and I cannot think of a better tribute.”

The bridge recently underwent major repairs and was reopened back in December and carries Sawkill Road over the Sawkill Creek, north of the Route 209 overpass.

Town of Ulster Supervisor James Quigley told the Freeman that,

“To my knowledge, he’s the first homegrown, local resident that had made it to the top of the police department and he served the community with distinction.

Chief Cruise passed away last year at the age of 48 due to cancer.
