An Ulster County man was arrested after police say he threatened a number of victims with an ax. The man also allegedly damaged property with the weapon.

Deputies from the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of Route 55 near the Rondout Reservoir in the Town of Wawarsing for a menacing complaint. An investigation revealed that 47-year-old David J. Edwards, of Napanoch aggressively approached the victims while holding an ax. Which caused the victims to fear of their safety, officials say.

Edwards also allegedly used the ax to damage a motor vehicle belonging to one of the victims.

Edwards was charged with 3rd-degree criminal mischief, a felony, 4th-degree criminal possession of a weapon, 2nd-degree reckless endangerment, and 2nd-degree menacing, misdemeanors.

Edwards was arraigned in the Town of Hurley Justice Court and remanded to the Ulster County Jail in lieu of $10,000 cash bail or $50,000 secured bond.

A full "stay away" order of protection was issued on behalf of the victims.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by the New York State Police and the New York City Department of Environmental Protection Police.
