Just how effective was the New York State Police's Operation Hang Up holiday distracted driving crackdown? Judging by the 14,000 tickets, pretty darn effective. Yep, according to Gov. Andrew Cuomo's office over 14,000 tickets were issued during the Thanksgiving weekend traffic enforcement.

Police were looking for distracted drivers, due to using hand held devices or talking on cell phones, or those driving under the influence.

“New York has zero tolerance for impaired and reckless drivers who put themselves and others at risk," Cuomo said in the press release. "I commend State Police keeping these dangerous drivers off the roads and helping to prevent needless tragedies this holiday weekend."

According to a press release, troopers issued 5,910 tickets for speeding, 715 for distracted driving, and made a total of 218 DWI arrests during the Thanksgiving campaign. This is up from last year when troopers issued 4,237 speeding tickets, gave out 565 tickets for distracted driving, and made 172 DWI arrests during the 2014 Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

Operation Hang Up ran from the Wednesday, Nov. 25 through Sunday, Nov. 29.
