Newborn Baby Found Dead in Vacant Lot in Hudson Valley

The investigation continues after a newborn baby with the umbilical cord still attached was found dead in a vacant lot.

On Nov. 12, around 10:30 p.m., Port Jervis City police officers responded to a vacant lot located on Orange Street at the intersection with Hornbeck Avenue for a report of a dead infant lying on the ground inside the vacant lot.

Officers responded to the scene and found the dead baby. The baby appeared to have been born recently because the umbilical cord was still attached, police say.

Based upon circumstances and undisclosed information learned at the scene, officers sealed off the scene as a crime scene for forensic processing.

Police spoke to the infant's mother but her name wasn't released and she hasn't been charged as police continue to investigate, ABC reports. A detective told the New Jersey Herald, the baby was out in the freezing cold without any clothing.

On Monday, police provided an update, saying an autopsy was performed by the Office of the Orange County Medical Examiner and police and prosecutors are currently awaiting the results of several tests,

However, the test results are not expected to be available for review by the investigative team until potentially late December, police say.
