What's for dinner Thursday night? My answer is anything my husband decides to make. Hopefully something great from the grill. Although with the looming weather forecast for the end of the week being snow I may have to settle for something cooked inside. So why would I be leaving dinner up to my husband? Simple the first Thursday in November is National Men Make Dinner Day.

Sandy Sharkey is credited with starting this day in 2001. The idea was to give women a day out of the kitchen. National Men Make Dinner Day even has it's own website which includes recipe ideas. The whole idea is for men to take over the kitchen and prepare a meal. It doesn't matter whether they know what they are doing or not the goal is for them to learn. To be honest most men now a days know their way around a kitchen and some are amazing cooks.

My husband for instance has a fried chicken recipe that make any other fried chicken look like pre-pressed nuggets. He can also make chili beef, pork or turkey that would  have you asking for seconds. His spaghetti sauce is one of a kind and he isn't even Italian. Of course he can cook just about anything on a grill. I guess it is men's cooking day at my house often but I will celebrate on Thursday anyway.

For men who will be trying this out for the first time this year the National Calendar people have laid out a few rules.

Men need to be aware that there is a list of rules that must be followed, some of which include:

  • The main meal must include a minimum of 4 ingredients and require at least one cooking utensil other than a fork.
  • The man goes shopping for all the necessary ingredients.
  • Clean up as you go.
  • Aprons are optional.
