Kelly Clarkson Doesn’t Want Her Girls Put in the ‘Pretty’ Box
Kelly Clarkson isn't one of those moms who puts a ban on princess culture, but she still is aware of how important it is to express to her daughters that there is more to life than being pretty.
The singer and Voice coach takes a moderate and sensible approach when talking to her daughter River Rose, 3, and stepdaughter Savannah, 16. As she told People for their annual "Beautiful" issue, she makes a point to use other adjectives that don't necessarily have to do with their looks.
"I'm not one of those people that's like, 'I hate princesses.' I think they're awesome, I know all the songs," Clarkson told the magazine. "But I make a point to always say other adjectives. It's not always like, 'Oh, you look beautiful.' It's like, 'Man, you’re so rad,' 'You're stylish,' 'You're cool,' 'You’re unique.'"
Clarkson adds that her husband, Brandon Blackstock, is on board with this approach. “My husband and I are really blunt with our kids," she notes. "I'm like, 'Pretty fades, character lasts.' Being fun lasts, being a good human matters and being smart is important."
She admits this can be difficult at times, since her stepdaughter is "model-worthy gorgeous" and her younger girl receives "pretty" compliments on a regular basis. "I don't mind her being pretty, I don't mind people saying it, but I don't want her to get boxed into that," she says wisely.
