New 7-Eleven to Open on Route 9 in Wappingers Falls
Slurpee fans are rejoicing over the news that 7-Eleven is returning to a whole new Route 9 location.
Long-time residents of the Hudson Valley will remember visiting the 7-Eleven on the corner of Route 9 and Old Hopewell Road. Although it's been a decade since the convenience store closed its doors and transformed into a Gulf Mart, the old 7-Eleven has not been forgotten.
As the site of the legendary Roof-A-Thon fundraisers and late-night snack runs, 7-Eleven was a huge part of the history of the Hudson Valley that has been lost to history.
Over the past few years, more and more 7-Eleven locations have disappeared from the landscape of the Hudson Valley. Today there are just three locations still open on Hooker Avenue in Poughkeepsie, Route 17K in Newburgh and Route 17M in Monroe. But that is all about to change.
7-Eleven Making a Comeback in New York
The convenience store brand has been slowly gobbling up local gas stations throughout the Empire State. After finalizing a deal to purchase over 1,000 Sunoco stations in 2021 the company began to transform convenience stores into 7-Eleven locations. This brought back the brand to both Newburgh and Monroe.
In 2022, 7-Eleven acquired 3,800 Speedway locations in 38 states with a plan to expand even further.
Route 9 Location in the Works
Paperwork has been submitted to the Village of Wappingers Falls to construct a new 7-Eleven market at the Speedway on Route 9 next to Double O Grill. Preliminary plans show the transformation of the existing mini-mart to a new, expanded 7-Eleven store.
Plans will be reviewed by the Village Planning Board next month. Due to the fact that an existing market is already on the site, there's not expected to be much pushback to the switchover to 7-Eleven. That means Slurpee fans could soon be saying "Oh, thank heaven!"
