It's surprising, but not a lot of people in New York how to get notified if there's an emergency.

The world is a pretty crazy place and you really never know what will happen next or what emergency will pop up. Emergencies can happen at anytime/anyplace and everyone usually thinks they are prepared, but a lot of times we learn we aren't as prepared as we think and that just isn't the case.

If you take a look at the past year we've had some pretty crazy things happen here in New York. We experienced an earthquake, bad flooding and there was a record number of tornados that touched down (and did a good amount of damage) as well. Sometimes we overlook steps on how to prepare, but there's a quick and easy way to get information when an emergency is happening in New York.

How can you get notified of an emergency in New York?

It's very quick, easy and simple. The official website for New York State has an option where you can sign up to receive emergency alerts. I know it sounds like common sense and one of those "DUH" moments, but you'd be surprised how many people forget to do this and miss out on critical information in a time of need.

The emergency alerts contain critical, emergency-related information and also includes instructions and recommendations in real-time by emergency personnels. The information can be on a number of issues including severe weather warnings, highway closures, hazardous material spills and other emergency situations as they present themselves.

The good part is all areas of New York are included in the system, it's a FREE service and you can be notified by phone, text, email or fax. Click here to sign up and be part of NY-Alert and make sure you're extra prepared for anything. Hopefully it won't be needed for a while, but it's really good to know it's there if something happens (knocks on wood nothing big happens).
