The Hudson Valley, known for its scenic farms, is feeling the impact of an ongoing bird flu outbreak that’s driving egg prices up. The highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), which has affected over 130 million birds since 2022, has recently wiped out millions of hens, causing a sharp decline in the egg supply.

The Local Impact on Egg Production

As bird flu spreads, the local economy is taking a hit. Over 13 million egg-laying hens died in December, and another 3.3 million perished in early January. For Hudson Valley farmers, this crisis means fewer eggs are available to meet growing consumer demand. Egg prices across the U.S. have risen by 37% in the past year, with a dozen large, Grade A eggs now averaging $4.15.

The Strain on Local Farms

While migratory birds have traditionally spread the virus, a troubling new development has emerged. The virus has been found in dairy cows, adding a new risk for poultry farms. “We now have to worry about interactions with infected dairy herds,” says Yuko Sato, a poultry veterinarian at Iowa State University.

When bird flu is detected, entire flocks are culled to prevent further spread, which exacerbates the egg shortage.

Long Island Farm Euthanizes 100K Ducks

An outbreak of H5N1 avian influenza has struck Crescent Duck Farm in Aquebogue, Long Island, leading to the euthanization of its entire flock of over 100,000 ducks. The farm is under quarantine, and while no human cases have been reported, officials are monitoring potentially exposed workers. This marks a significant blow to the last remaining duck farm on Long Island, which has been family-owned since 1908.

Looking Ahead: Will Egg Prices Return to Normal?

As the virus is controlled, egg prices are expected to stabilize. However, ongoing outbreaks could lead to further price fluctuations. For now, Hudson Valley consumers will continue to feel the effects at the grocery store.
