Ulster County Jail Now Reporting Violent Inmate Altercations
The Ulster County Sheriff's Office reported a number of incidents within the confines of the facility involving current inmates. These took place within the month of August and resulted in arrests.
August 17th: Physical Altercation Using Food Tray
The Ulster County Sheriff's Office reported that on August 17, 2024, an 'incarcerated individual engaged in a physical altercation with another incarcerated individual while in possession of a plastic food tray.' It was reported that a 27-year-old inmate used the tray as a weapon against a 26-year-old inmate
The 27-year-old, whose hometown is Ellenville, was charged with Assault in the Second Degree and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree. At this time, he remains incarcerated in the Ulster County Jail until his next court appearance.

August 20th: Physical Altercation Using Wooden Brush Handle
Just three days following the above incident, Ulster County Sheriff's report that another phusical altercation took place where a 62-year-old inmate used a 'wooden-brush handle' as a weapon against a 33-year-old inmate. The victim required medical treatment and a transport to Health Alliance Hospital St. Mary's in Kingston.
The 62-year-old, whose hometown is Kingston, was charged with two counts of Assault in the Second Degree and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, and also remains incarcerated in the Ulster County Jail pending future court dates.
August 20th: Attempted Stabbing of a Corrections Officer
On August 20th, it was also reported that an inmate, around 8:00am:
Exited his cell and approached the officer's desk within a housing unit of the Ulster County Jail. The incarcerated individual immediately began to destroy computers and other electronics on the desk used by corrections staff to communicate and control operations within the housing unit.
The Ulster County Sheriff's Office went on to detail that the inmate used a 'sharp piece of wood, approximately 11 inches in length' that was broken off the desk of the officer, and attempted to stab the C.O. multiple times. The Sheriff's Emergency Response Team was able to intervene, and the injured officer was also taken to Health Alliance Hospital St. Mary's in Kingston for medical attention.
The 51-year-old inmate, of Kingston was charged with Attempted Assault in the First Degree, three counts of Assault in the Second Degree, and Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree. He too remains at the Ulster County jail pending further court appearances.
