Some Hudson Valley students will no longer be able to bring bookbags to school.

Starting Tuesday, May 28, Poughkeepsie High School and Poughkeepsie Middle School students will no longer be allowed to bring bookbags or string bags to school, the district announced on its website Thursday. Students will be allowed to bring a fannypack or small pocketbook.

The Poughkeepsie School District wrote the following on its website:

For the safety and security of our schools, effective Tuesday, May 28, no student will be permitted to enter the middle school or the high school with a book bag or string bag. Students may only carry a small pocketbook or fanny pack for personal items.

Thank you for your support of safety and security in the Poughkeepsie City School District.

The school district didn't go into details about what led to the backpack ban, but there have been a number of incidents involving students and weapons this month.

City of Poughkeepsie police officers responded to Poughkeepsie High School on May 15 after it was reported a student attempted to enter the school with a loaded handgun.

The student had the gun in a backpack. A school security guard secured the weapon and brought the student to a nearby office, police say.

Days later, a 14-year-old from Poughkeepsie turned himself into police for allegedly stabbing a 16-year-old.
