A local man with the nickname “Killa,” is heading to prison on drug and weapon charges.

On Friday in Sullivan County Court, 31-year-old Kyle James, aka "Killa", of Liberty was sentenced to 17 years in state prison for possession of an illegal and loaded handgun and approximately 50 grams of heroin.

On January 27, 2016, Liberty police received a call about a domestic dispute and a man with a gun at a home on Albion Street.

After the execution of a search warrant at the home, police found a loaded .380 Bersa handgun along with 50 grams of heroin, 30 grams of cocaine, 17 ounces of marijuana and $5,000 in cash, police say.

James recently pleaded guilty to criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a controlled substance. He was convicted in 2011 for selling drugs.

“This defendant's history is one of drug dealing and he possessed these drugs with the intent to sell them in our community,” Sullivan County District Attorney Jim Farrell said. “The sentence handed down today reinforces our position that those that possess and sell this poison will be held accountable and responsible with state prison sentences.”
