Hudson Valley Driver Impaired by ‘Cocktail of Drugs’ Kills Boy
A Hudson Valley driver impaired by a "deadly cocktail of drugs" killed a 10-year-old and seriously injured the boy's brother.
On Tuesday, Sullivan County District Attorney Jim Farrell announced Luis Diaz, 35, of Bethel was sentenced to 6 to 18 years in state prison for aggravated vehicular homicide and driving while ability impaired by drugs.
Diaz confessed he was driving impaired by drugs on June 20, which resulted in him crashing his vehicle on State Route 17B in the Town of Thompson, killing 10-year-old Noah DeMondo.
The crash was so severe it split the car into two pieces and also seriously injured Noah's younger brother, Aiden, who has since recovered, according to the Sullivan County District Attorney.
Diaz's blood contained what officials call a "deadly cocktail of drugs," including morphine, Xanax, fentanyl and meprobamate.
"For the crimes he committed and the horrific resulting loss of an innocent life this defendant should be held to the full prison sentence of eighteen years imposed in this case. Defendant's criminal actions have robbed a family of their son and caused a trauma that will likely never heal. Noah's father is heartbroken and his life, and the life of his surviving son, will never be the same," Farrell said.
Diaz's driver's license was also permanently revoked.
