The DEC was called after family members couldn't make contact with a 60-year-old Hudson Valley man who's hiking alone from the Finger Lakes to the Catskill Mountains.

On Monday, Delaware County 911 was notified that a 60-year-old Kingston man hiking alone from the Finger Lakes to the Catskill Mountains failed to call family as part of his hiking itinerary.

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation forest rangers checked trail register boxes along the border of Chenango and Delaware counties, but couldn't find any clues, officials say. Delaware County 911 provided coordinates of the hiker's cell phone that placed him near Masonville.

Rangers then checked businesses in Downsville and trail registers in the Delaware Wild Forest without success, according to the DEC.

After the DEC learned about an alias the lost hiker might use, rangers found evidence he traveled through the area.

Later that night, rangers found him in good health at a lean-to along the trail. He explained that he couldn't get cell service in the area, the DEC reports.

The man's family was notified that the 60-year-old was fine and planned to continue his hike.
