Dutchess County Officer Revives Hudson Valley Man From Overdose

A Dutchess County police officer is credited with saving a Hudson Valley man's life who was overdosing in a car in Route 9.

On Saturday, Red Hook police officer Simmons responded to a call on Route 9 in the Town of Red Hook for an unconscious male slumped over the steering wheel not breathing. Officer Simmons sat the man up and saw that he was turning purple not breathing, police say.

Simmons and the Milan Fire Department Chief, Kurt Mitzger, took the man out of the vehicle and placed him on the ground where he still was not breathing. Officer Simmons quickly administered a dose of Narcan which had negative results, officials say.

Narcan is a drug which is known to reverse the effects from an opioid overdose,

Simmons quickly then ran back to his patrol car to retrieve more Narcan and administered a second dose of Narcan which yielded positive results, according to the Red Hook Police Department.

The unnamed man from Columbia County became responsive and started to resume normal breathing. He was then taken to Northern Dutchess Hospital.

Officer Simmons is also a Fireman with the Tivoli Fire Department where he is trained to administer Narcan as well. He will be presented with a Life-Saving Award by the Village of Red Hook in the future, according to the Red Hook Police Department.
