According to Central Hudson, there is a new bill payment scam targeting consumers. “This is the latest of several scams taking place here in New York and other parts of the country, and we ask our customers to be vigilant in protecting themselves and their account information,” said Charles A. Freni, Senior Vice President of Customer Services for Central Hudson.

Apparently, costumers are being contacted by phone by individuals who claim to be with or representing Central Hudson. They claim that the customer did not make a deposit for an opt-out program and/or meter change. The caller then directs them to pay their utility bill using cash or an express wire transfer and if they don't pay, their utility services will be shut off. They also provide a name and telephone number for a return call with a toll-free number.

According to Central Hudson's press release, Central Hudson would never request a customer to pay a bill in this manner. In addition, the call will look like it came from Central Hudson as the thieves are now able to forge caller id. If you receive such a call and you are unsure, please hang up and call  Central Hudson at (845) 452-2700.
