We Have The First Super Blue Blood Moon In 150 Years Coming Up
Almost every month you hear about another interstellar phenomenon, and January is no different. Luckily, we are getting 3 awesome moon events to look at all on the same night, for the first time in 150 years. Now I know the name is confusing, but it's pretty easy to understand once you break it down.
A blue moon, blood moon, and supermoon are all three different things. A blue moon is when there are two full moons in one month. A blood moon is also known as a total lunar eclipse, which is when the moon passes fully behind Earth in its shadow. This can only happen when the Sun, Earth, and moon are completely aligned. When the moon starts to emerge from behind Earth, it appears as a pink-orange color, depending on what is in the atmosphere at that moment. Hence the name, blood moon. A supermoon is when the moon looks slightly larger than normal. So a Super Blue Blood Moon is when all three happen on the same night.
On January 31, this spectacle is going to take place in the sky. For North America, it will happen around 12:51 Universal Time, according to Travel and Leisure. The important part of the event will last for 1 hour and 16 minutes. The best place to see it, unfortunately, is the west coast of the US. If you're watching on the east, you will only see a partial eclipse and no color change.
But if you want to snap a picture of the crazy moon, you're in luck. This phenomenon is one of the best moon-occurrences to photograph because the moon isn't as bright as it normally is, as stated in the article. Plus it will be a cool color.
