Update: Fire Kills Hudson Valley Father and Son
A blaze in the Hudson Valley has now claimed the lives of a father and son.
On Monday, detectives from the Ulster County Sheriff's Office reported a second fatality following a fire in the Town of Hurley early Sunday morning.
Following the fire, 89-year-old Carl J. Mondello Jr. was taken to Kingston Hospital and was listed in critical condition. He died due to his injuries, police say.
During the blaze, Mondello, Jr., was able to help his daughter, 60-year-old Marianne Agnello, who lived at the home with her father, escape. He was then removed from the burning home by firefighters.
Mondello’s son, 62-year-old Richard J. Mondello, who was visiting from Ohio, was later found deceased by firefighters in the room where the fire is believed to have started.
Agnello was transported to Northern Dutchess Hospital for evaluation.
Although the investigation is ongoing, the fire is not considered suspicious at this time, officials say.
There were no animals in the house at the time and no first responders were injured.
