A serious two car head on collision caused Route 9W to be closed in the earlier hours Sunday morning. The Esopus Fire Department sent a press release out Just after 8 am on Sunday morning regarding an accident that had taken place earlier which resulted in Route 9W being closed for about three hours in the area near the station.

According to the release the investigation was on going but the dispatch report was for a two car accident with injuries in the area of 617 Route 9W. When emergency services arrived within minutes of the notification they discovered the accident involved two cars that had struck each other head on leaving both drives stuck in their vehicles with serious injuries.

The "jaws of life" were used to free the victims and two medical helicopters were called to the scene.Both patients were freed within 40 minutes and were transported by Town of Esopus Volunteer Ambulance Squad to the helicopter landing zone. The Medevac helicopters then transported the victims to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla.

Esopus Firefighters were assisted by the Town of Esopus Volunteer Ambulance Squad, Highland Hose Company, Port Ewen Fire Dept, St. Remy Fire Dept, Mobile Life Support, Ulster County Emergency Services, NYS DOT, Ulster County Sheriff’s Office and the New York State Police.

At the time of this post the cause of the accident was not available and their is no further information regarding the injuries or outcome for the victims. We will update this article if we receive more information.
