Could this be the end of an icon?

Necco has been making those fun Valentine hearts and Necco waffers for 170 years and in about 2 months they could be done.

According to Today, Necco, which stands for New England Confectionery Co., could have to lay off almost 400 employees and close its Massachusetts factory if they don't find a buyer for the company.

Necco chief executive Michael McGee told Today that they are in negotiations with some potential buyers but if no sale is made within 60 days of the company's March 6th notice they will have to end operations at their plant in Revere, Massachusetts. Mcgee has a SOS message for potential buyers,"CALL ME."

According to Necco, 2 billion individual boxes of those little hearts with short messages on them are sold in the six weeks surrounding Valentine’s Day and to not see them on store shelves around Valentines day would really stink, so lets hope that they find a buyer and nobody has to lose their job.

If they do close we will still have similar candy companies, Brach's and Wonka for our Valentines Day.
