A trailer was just released for a new movie called Welcome to Marwen, a sort-of fantasy-drama starring Steve Carell and directed by Robert Zemeckis, the filmmaker behind Back to the FutureWho Framed Roger RabbitForrest Gump, and Cast Away.

I saw the trailer and thought it looked pretty good - I'm always down for a new Zemeckis joint, and the movie looks like an interesting blend of live-action and animation that could make for a quirky, engaging story. What I didn't know is that it's based on a true story, and Steve Carell is actually playing Kingston resident Mark Hogancamp.

Hogancamp's story is fascinating: he suffered a brain injury after being beaten outside of a bar in Kingston, then goes on to create an imaginary world called "Marwencol," populated by World War II figures that help him deal with his disability. It was the subject of a documentary in 2010.

It's a pretty cool local connection to an upcoming film from one of my favorite working directors. I prefer the wackier period of Zemeckis' career in the '80s (if you haven't seen it, watch Used Cars; It's a masterpiece), but he's had a great streak lately with films like FlightThe Walk, and Allied.

I know I'll be seeing Welcome to Marwen when it hits theaters. Think any Kingston-based movie theaters will be doing anything special when it comes out?
