Somebody’s Stealing Newburgh’s Parking Meters

If you've pulled into a parking spot in Newburgh recently and were pleasantly surprised that you didn't need to put a coin in the parking meter, because it was missing, you aren't alone. Apparently, several parking meters around Newburgh have gone suddenly disappeared.

Yesterday, according to the City of Newburgh Police, they received an early morning call from someone who had just witnessed a couple removing a parking meter and pole from around Broadway and Fullerton Avenue.

Officers were dispatched and after canvassing the area, located the couple, who were positively identified. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that they had apparently taken the parking meter to a vacant, city-owned building where they had been living. The police uncovered a total of 10 parking meters in the building worth more than $9,000.

43-year-old Jesse Diaz of Newburgh and 30-year-old Kimberly Cook, also of Newburgh were each charged with burglary, criminal mischief, grand larceny, and criminal possession of stolen property, all of which are felony charges. They are being held pending their arraignment in the City of Newburgh Court.
