Legislation was just passed on April 21 that makes certain fireworks legal in our area, just in time for summer.

New York state recently signed into law a bill allowing sparklers, party poppers, cone fountains and other novelty items to be sold during certain dates in the state. One of the provisions of the new law, however, states that local communities must vote to opt-in or else the fireworks will remain illegal.

Orange County voted to lift the sparklers ban last month, and now it looks like more Hudson Valley communities are following suit.

On April 21 the Ulster County Legislature voted 14-8 to approve the sale of “sparkler devices." According to the Times Herald Record, sales of sparklers will be allowed from June 1 through July 5, and December 26 through January 2. The small fireworks can only be purchased by adults over 18 and sold through licensed businesses.

In Dutchess County, a public meeting will be held on April 28 to discuss lifting the sparkler ban. Some sources say that the County Executive has indicated he would sign the bill into law. If so, it would most likely take effect 10 days later.

Some local fire officials have spoken out against allowing sparklers and other small fireworks to be made legal. What do you think? Is this a good idea or do you think it will put New Yorkers in harm's way?
