A New Jersey man faces charges after he was identified as a suspect in a burglary Wednesday afternoon in New Windsor and then allegedly attempted to avoid apprehension by law enforcement.

The New Windsor Police Department responded to a call for a burglary in progress on Union Avenue at around 1:30PM on Wednesday. By the time officers arrived the suspect had left the scene but was found driving a white van south on Route 32.

Despite attempts to pull the suspect over, 43-year-old Ryan Leak continued to drive through the five corners in Vails Gate. He then continued the chase on Route 32 before leaving the van to escape on foot.

A perimeter was established by officers from the New York State Police and local officers from Cornwall. The New York State Police Aviation also helped when the pursuit moved to a marshy area.

Leak was eventually located by Officers Suttlehan and Takeuchi from the New Windsor Police Department when he was arrested with help from New York State Troopers from Troop F. Leak has been connected to three other burglaries on Wednesday. He has also been connected to burglaries in Tuxedo and Woodbury.

The investigation into the burglaries is ongoing.
