A man who injured himself when he drove into a pole in Ulster County is accused of driving drunk.

On Saturday evening, Saugerties Police responded to reports of a car vs utility pole on Route 32 north, near 3657 Route 32. Once on the scene, cops found the driver of the car, 30-year-old Eban C. Brown of Catskill, who complained of several injuries.

A police investigation determined that Brown was traveling south on Route 32 when he failed to negotiate a curve in the road. Brown drove off the road and hit a pole and speed limit sign, police say. The sign and pole were both split in half.

The accident caused Brown’s airbags to go off. Police allege that Brown was driving drunk at the time of the crash. An open container of alcohol was found in the car, authorities say.

Brown was treated at the scene by Paramedics from DIAZ Ambulance and transported to the Kingston Hospital for additional treatment of his injuries. Police did not reveal his injuries.

Brown was charged with driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor, and given a violation for failure to stay right. He was released on his own recognizance. Brown is scheduled to return to the Town of Saugerties Court to answer his charges on Oct. 19.
