A couple from the Hudson Valley is accused of stealing beer and soda from a local supermarket and later hitting a detective.

Recently, members of the Putnam County Sheriff’s officer were sent to a ShopRite on Route 52 in Carmel. A store detective told arriving deputies that a man and woman, 29-year-old Eric A. Hawkins and 44-year-old Jennifer Giorgio, both of Kent, allegedly stole beer and soft drinks from the supermarket.

Hawkins is accused of punching the store detective when he tried to stop them. Both fled the scene before police arrival.

Sheriff’s deputies and investigators, with assistance from the Town of Kent Police Department, searched the area and later found the couple in Kent.

Both were charged with second-degree robbery, a felony.

Hawkins, who has two prior felony convictions, was remanded to the Putnam County Correctional Facility without bail. Giorgio was committed to the jail in lieu of $25,000 cash bail or $50,000 bail bond. Both are due in Town of Carmel Justice Court at a later date.

If found guilty of robbery, they could face up to 15 years in prison.
