About 5 years ago, a national publication, Adventure Journal, listed the Peekamoose Blue Hole in the Catskills as one of the top 5 swimming holes in the country. It's no wonder, it's a beautiful spot where really cold water rushes through the rocks and forms a very deep pool at the end.

When hazy, hot, and humid days come calling, the first thing you want to do is stay cool and often times, heading to the nearest pool, lake, pond, river, or swimming hole is the way to go. Once the word began to spread about the Peekamoose Blue Hole, people came to cool off in droves, by the thousands actually.

According to the New York State DEC, it's not unusual to have 700 people come to the Blue Hole in a single day. As a result, the area is being overrun with human waste, broken glass, garbage, fire, and cars parking along Peekamoose road. All of which are ruining the sense of peace and safety of the area.

As a result, the New York State DEC have established state regulations to limit the damage to the area and restore the sense of safety in the community. While you can get the complete list of regulations on the DEC website, here are a few rules to be followed. Camping is now prohibited at the site, cars not parked in designated areas will be towed, and no audio devices are permitted.

Let's all do our part, if you go to the Blue Hole this summer, follow the leave no trace principals so that others can enjoy this beautiful space too.
