NY DMV Encourages Drivers to get REAL ID

Have you gotten your REAL ID yet?

According to WTEN, the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles is encouraging us New Yorkers to get a REAL ID as soon as possible.

Why do we need a REAL ID? The DMV said that if us New Yorkers want to fly within the United States and use our New York State issued license or ID card for ID purposes we will need a REAL ID or Enhanced Driver’s License after the October 1, 2020 federal deadline.

So that means when you go to fly somewhere and they ask you for ID, your regular drivers license won't be accepted after Oct. 1, 2020 unless you also have additional forms of identification, like a passport.

If you are interested in getting a REAL ID, you need to head into your local DMV office to get your picture taken and make sure you bring the required documents including documents that establish your NY State residency, lawful presence in the U.S., Social Security status and if you have had your name changed for any reason, you need to bring in the court documents for the change.

The REAL ID will cost the same as a standard ID.
