Medical students got the surprise of a lifetime when they found out they were receiving free tuition.

ABC News reports that New York University (NYU) surprised students at their white coat ceremony. University officials announced at the end of the ceremony that the School of Medicine will cover tuition for all current and future students going forward. The white coat ceremony is when medical students receive their white lab coats to signify the start of their medical education.

During the ceremony, all current students in the medical program at NYU received an email saying the university was offering them full-ride scholarships. All students in the School of Medicine will be receiving free tuition, despite need or merit, according to ABC News.

The yearly tuition that is now being covered by New York University's School of Medicine is $55, 018 annually. NYU School of Medicine is the first private top 10 nationally ranked medical university to offer free tuition.
