Police in New York are increasing patrols and cracking down a very dangerous driving offense this week.

New York State Police and local law enforcement are searching for impaired driving and underage drinking through Halloween.

The enforcement campaign started Friday and runs through Thursday, Nov. 1.

"We want everyone to have a happy Halloween, but we also want them to celebrate safely and responsibly. Halloween is meant to be a fun holiday, but it can turn deadly when someone makes the wrong choice to drink and drive," Superintendent George P. Beach II said in a press release. "Our message is simple: If you drink, don’t drive."

Hudson Valley drivers can expect a number of sobriety checkpoints and additional DWI patrols. Police will be using marked and concealed police vehicles.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports Halloween is a particularly deadly night due to the high number of impaired drivers on the roads. Between 2012 and 2016, there were 168 drunk-driving fatalities on Halloween night.

Police also are reminding everyone to move over for emergency and hazard vehicles stopped on the side of the road.
