The Hudson Valley will be getting hit with some serious cold weather this week. Which makes for great conditions when it comes to winter activities.

There are so many opportunities here in the Hudson Valley to enjoy the outdoors during the winter months. We're close to several different ski towns and resorts and we have access to a bunch of rivers and lakes that make for excellent ice fishing adventures.

The Department of Environmental Conservation wants to make sure that, if you do take up ice fishing this year, safety is top of mind.

The DEC has shared some safety tips if you're heading out to ice fish this year.

When it comes to ice safety there are a few rules to follow. If the thickness of ice is 2 inches or less then stay off the ice. Ice fishing and other activities can be done on foot if the ice thickness is 4 inches or more,ATV's can be used on 5 inches of ice thickness. 8 to 12 inches of ice and a car or small SUV can be taken out on the ice. 12 to 15 inches of ice can handle a small truck.
