A teacher from the Hudson Valley was seriously injured after a gruesome attack by a shark.

On Wednesday, 61-year-old William Lytton was violently attacked by a shark while vacationing in Cape Cod. Reports say he was standing in shallow water about 30 yards offshore at Longknook Beach when he was bitten by a shark.

Lytton suffered serious injuries to his leg and torso. Officials say the 61-year-old's condition is improving and he's listed in fair condition at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, the Boston Globe reports.

Lytton is a professor at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, according to the Boston Globe. He graduated from Harvard in 1978.
