Black Friday, on November 23, 2018, is 148 days away.

A retailer in the Hudson Valley has already started hiring seasonal winter holiday help. According to Business Insider, Kohl's began hiring holiday help because of a 'retail labor crisis'.

The article reports that Kohl's is most likely trying to scoop up the best workers out there before other stores do. Workers want more training, pay, and flexibility, which is something most retail jobs don't offer. The median hourly wage for entry-level retail workers was $11.12 in 2017.

I've worked retail multiple times during the holidays and one thing is for certain, it sucks. If you are someone who celebrates Thanksgiving, like me, having to leave a dinner to go work at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving night is really sad. When I was in college, I couldn't go home for Thanksgiving because I had to work retail on Thanksgiving and Black Friday. Stores keep opening earlier each year on Thanksgiving/Black Friday, meaning less time to spend with family. Besides having to leave family, the stores get trashed by crazy shoppers looking for things, meaning more work than usual for you. The employee discount is never worth leaving your family dinner, in my opinion.

If you're looking to take on holiday retail work already, Kohl's has locations across the Hudson Valley:

  • Wappingers Falls
  • Newburgh
  • Middletown
  • Monroe
  • Port Chester
  • Kingston
  • Cortlandt Manor
  • Bedford Hills
  • Nanuet
