A local post office has a new name thanks to President Trump.

Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and Congressman John Faso were all sponsors of a bill to rename the post office at 111 Market St, Saugerties. The proposed bill was officially signed into law on Thursday.

Visitors of the Saugerties Post office will soon notice a new sign designating it as the Maurice Hinchey Post Office. The post office has been renamed to honor the late United States Representative.

Louise Slaughter, a representative for the 25th New York District, was an original sponsor of the bill before she passed away this year.

Senator Schumer was delighted the bill was signed into law, saying "This designation is a fitting tribute to this hometown hero who relentlessly fought to represent the citizens of the very community he cherished so greatly in the House of Representatives."

Both sides of the aisle praised the name change. Republican John Faso said, "Naming Congressman Hinchey’s hometown post office after him is an enduring recognition of his lifelong commitment to public service and the people of Upstate New York."

Congressman Maurice Hinchey served New Yorkers for 38 years in both the New York State Assembly and the U.S. House of Representatives. Hinchey was 79 when he passed away in November.
