A hotel chain with multiple locations in the Hudson Valley has been affected by a massive data breach.

The Washington Post reported that Marriott International announced on Friday, November 30, 2018, that their reservation system, Starwood, was hacked. They said that up to 500 million customers may have had information stolen.

The breach occurred in 2014. An unauthorized party hacked Starwood's reservation system, according to the Washington Post. The information hacked includes names, email addresses, passport numbers, and payment information. As of now, it is most likely certain social security numbers were not taken.

I'm sure you're wondering: if the breach happened in 2014 why is it just being reported now? According to the Washington Post, the encryption used to hack the system was being made as they were hacking the data, allowing them to hide what they were taking from the system. Marriott was not able to decrypt it until November 19, 2018.

Marriott also acquired Starwood in 2016, so when the merger was occurring the breach still went undetected, according to the Washington Post. Marriott owns multiple hotel brands, including Marriott and Marriott brand hotels, Sheraton, Four Points, and plenty more.

Marriott International has multiple hotels in the Hudson Valley:

Residence Inn, Poughkeepsie

Courtyard by Marriott, Poughkeepsie

SpringHill Suites by Marriott, Fishkill

Courtyard, Fishkill

Residence Inn, Fishkill

FourPoints by Sheraton, Newburgh Stewart Airport

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the breach, Marriott has set up a website for you to ask them.
