A number of witnesses chased down and helped police catch a man who's accused of stealing a few women’s purses.

On Monday night, Kingston Police responded to Wall Street for a report of a robbery. Police were told a man, later identified as 37-year-old Christopher D. Hasenflue of Catskill, grabbed a purse off a table while a 48-year-old woman was having a meal at an outside table in the City of Kingston.

Hasenflue then fled the restaurant with the purse. A witness chased after Hasenflue, tackled him to the ground, and grabbed back the purse.

Police say Hasenflue displayed a knife and briefly chased the person who picked up the purse. Hasenflue ran away when witnesses said they were calling 911.

Shortly afterwards, at Fair and John Streets, Hasenflue is accused of robbing a 67-year-old woman of her purse at knife point.

Two people heard the woman scream, noticed Hasenflue running with a purse, and chased after him. Hasenflue then allegedly threatened the pair with a knife a fled behind a building.

The witnesses were able to direct police to the area were Hasenflue was last seen. He was taken into custody a short time later.

Hasenflue was charged with robbery and criminal possession of a weapon, both felonies, and resisting arrest, a misdemeanor.

Police say the investigation is continuing and more charges are expected.
