A historic local hotel that started out as a hot dog stand in the late 1920s has been demolished to make way for a new resort community.

The Williams Lake Hotel might have come down, but the $160 million Williams Lake Resort is going up. The Times Herald Record reports the nearly 800-acre property will sport a 130-room hotel as well as a mix of townhouses and single family homes.

The project is eight years in the making as the investors, Hudson River Valley Resorts, had to take into consideration the environmentally sensitive nature of the lake and surrounding area.

According to The Record, the land was initially purchased by Gus Williams in 1929 and sits on what is now the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail. The nearby Binnewater Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The new project is expected to break ground in the spring, with completion sometime in 2018.
