Police allege a motorcycle driver was speeding and driving on the wrong side of the road which caused a fatal accident with an unlicensed driver next to a Hudson Valley Little League field.

On Tuesday around 7 p.m., City of Newburgh police and fire departments responded to the area of 355 South William Street for a report of a motor vehicle accident involving a car and a motorcycle.

Upon arrival officers and Mobil Life Support Services staff determined that the operator of the motorcycle was dead.

A large crowd soon formed and officers from The New Windsor Police Department, Town of Newburgh Police Department, Orange County Sheriff’s Office and The New York State Police responded to assist with crowd control so the fatal accident could be investigated, police say.

It's believed that the driver of the motorcycle was driving on the wrong side of the road at a high rate of speed when it struck the car head-on, according to the City of Newburgh Police Department.

The occupants of the car were treated at St. Lukes Cornwall Hospital for minor injuries and released. The driver of the car was issued a traffic citation for unlicensed operation.

The Town of New Windsor Police Department responded to the scene and performed an accident reconstruction and the Orange County District Attorney’s Office is assisting in the investigation which is ongoing at this time.

Police have yet to release the names of either driver. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to call City of Newburgh Detectives at 845-569-7509
